Germany, Heer. A Heer Commemorative Bayonet, By Carl Eickhorn

G3238

(Heer Bayonet). This is a very well-preserved Heer commemorative bayonet, measuring 395 mm in length when inserted into the scabbard. The bayonet features a 250 mm-long nickel-plated magnetic metal blade, the obverse of which features an an acid-etched inscription of “ZUR ERINNERUNG AN MEINE DIENSTZEIT” (“IN MEMORY OF MY SERVICE TIME”) in Fraktur script, set on a scroll surrounded by oak leaves and flanked by Heer-style German national eagles clutching mobile swastikas. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “ORIGINAL EICKHORN, SOLINGEN”, along with the firm’s logo of a squirrel clutching a sword. The blade has a sharpened tip and blunted edges. The crossguard has been filed down a bit, itself presenting with a hooked quillon. The handle is of multi-piece construction, and consists of two piece of pebbled black bakelite joined by dual magnetic metal rivets. The pommel bears an analogous hook forming a grip with the upper crossguard, and features a slot for insertion into a rifle. The bayonet is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of black-painted magnetic metal. It has a hook for attachment to a frog which has since been lost. The throat is held together by a single rivet, and retains a functional spring catch securely holding the bayonet in place during storage. The metal parts show signs wear, and the scabbard has its original paint. The bayonet is otherwise in very good condition. Tarnishing and wear ais evident to the metallic features, the blade is in excellent condition and the scabbard has its original paint. The bayonet is in an otherwise very fine condition.
